Tonja Warren is a multidisciplinary artist at the forefront of the Detroit and Afrofuturist aesthetic. Hailing from the heart of Detroit, Tonja writes, performs and directs. Her artistry spans music, theater, film, performance poetry and conceptual art.
The author of a signature, Detroit anthem, Tonja has been a grantee of both Detroit Future Media and Revolve Detroit. Through Detroit Future Media, Tonja seeded experimental multimedia on womanism. In collaboration with Revolve Detroit, Tonja nurtured Detroit area writers via an eclectic workshop series called Word. From screenwriters to songwriters, and the Detroit anthem movement, Word offered game changing stimulus.
Tonja has also garnered a New York Foundation of the Arts Artist Fellowship, Urbanworld Film Festival finalist nod and stage reading, and admission into IFP New York’s elite, filmmaker mentoring program, Project Involve. Tonja has won ovations for numerous stage roles and her performance poetry has been showcased at several notable venues including the Nuyorican Poets Cafe and the Imagenation Film and Musical Festival. When she is not situating her probes between Hip Hop theatre and performance art, Tonja is presciently wielding singular formats, ambitious mashups or mentoring emerging artists.
