Michael Forsyth is an economic development specialist and Michigan native. He attended Michigan State University where he earned a degree in Environmental Studies and a master’s in Urban and Regional Planning. While at MSU, Michael worked the night shift at General Motors and at the Land Policy Institute between classes. During that time Michael fell in love with Detroit through some strange combination of joining the UAW, planning inner cities and playing rock shows at Detroit dives. That love led Michael to seek experiences that he could apply in the city. He studied in Germany’s post-industrial cities and joined a Seattle consulting firm where he led a range of economic development and planning projects. He’s a proud new Midtown resident and is thankful to be part of truly a special city.
Michael works at the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation (DEGC) as a Retail Business Development Manager. He helps Detroit small businesses connect to resources and manages major new retail developments. Michael is currently conducting on a series of pilot programs to inform a citywide retail strategy. REVOLVE Detroit is a collaborative program of the DEGC that partners with local leaders, building owners, entrepreneurs, and artists to activate vacant storefronts with transformational businesses and art installations. The goal of the program is to foster the evolution and vibrancy of Detroit's neighborhood business districts.
Aside from his work with the DEGC, Michael is working on launching a business of his own: The Detroit City Distillery. It will be coming soon to Eastern Market in Detroit and will feature locally made Whiskey, Gin and Vodka.
